On the 12th of April 2020, new restrictions were announced by the Irish government due to covid-19. For several weeks, we were only allowed to move within a 2km radius of our homes. I began to notice small details in my surroundings, like the leaves unfurling on the horse chestnut tree a the end of the street. Birds seemed to be singing more loudly, and I spent a lot of time at the sea, poking in rockpools and wandering along the sand. Each day I painted some of what I had seen, and wrote about my feelings, finding with surprise that instead of trapped, I often felt calm and liberated.
